The Calvert MMA Academy opened in 2007, bringing world class instruction in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Thai Boxing to Southern Maryland for the first time. In addition to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Thai Boxing, we have had guest instructors teach American freestyle wrestling, western boxing, and Kodokan Judo at our academy. When we originally put “MMA” in our name, we did it with the thought and purpose of MMA not being a “style” of martial art, but the actual teaching of multiple martial art disciplines within one academy. Although we have students who compete in MMA events, today’s definition of MMA is not what we intended for the public perception of our academy. We are a MMA academy because we offer multiple styles of martial arts within the Calvert MMA Academy.
Who we are:
We are a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, certified under Relson Gracie. We are a part of Team Relson Gracie and our Jiu-Jitsu program is “Lineage BJJ”. Our Jiu-Jitsu Team has over 10,000 active members and over 40 locations worldwide. If you include our extended family of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academies, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Certified Training Centers and students, our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu team has well over 100,000 active members worldwide.
We are an authentic Muay Thai training camp. Calvert MMA Academy’s Muay Thai program “T.A.G. Muay Thai” is the most successful of its kind in Southern Maryland. Students in our program have won local / national titles, and took home bronze & silver on the world stage at the 2014 WKA World Championships in Tuscany, Italy.
Why choose us:
Value – Locally our prices are competitive / nationally our prices are below average for the same martial arts programs, in some cases 50% lower. The director of our Jiu-Jitsu program, Relson Gracie is one of only a few people to be awarded a Red Belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Belt promotions earned in our jiu-jitsu program, to include black belt diplomas are awarded directly by him. Our Thai Boxing program is the most successful of its’ kind in Southern Maryland. In addition to training at Calvert, our students may train at our sister Thai Boxing club, T.A.G. Muay Thai in Sterling, VA.
Calvert MMA Academy has a very high student to teacher ratio, so you or your child will receive private attention every class. When you become a member of the Calvert MMA Academy, you join a team and are treated as family. You will know your instructors by first name, and can address them by their name or simply “Coach” or “Kru”. We don’t have any hidden fees; we never charge for belt promotions in our Jiu-Jitsu programs. Our philosophy is “you paid for the belt with your hard work”. We do offer group patch (level) testing for a small fee in our Thai Boxing program. Group testing in our Thai Boxing program is not mandatory for promotion, but many students choose to attend because we invite high-level guest instructors to assist with the training and testing.
The Calvert MMA Academy Staff strictly enforces all safety rules at the academy. Any member or guest who purposely violates any safety rule is no longer allowed to train at the academy. To reduce risk of unnecessary injuries our staff educates each student on proper training techniques, attitude, and safety to avoid injuries. In addition for your safety and benefit, Calvert MMA Academy’s training equipment is top of the line, kept in excellent condition or it’s replaced immediately.
MRSA, Staph, Ringworm, etc… Infections are serious problems that face every gym. At the Calvert MMA Academy we have not experienced one infectious outbreak since opening in 2007. We take cleanliness very seriously, both within our gym and of our members. Our staff cleans / disinfects our academy daily and between classes as necessary. We educate our members and staff on how to prevent infections and require clean uniforms and equipment for each class.
