The Calvert MMA Academy is proud and excited to be the only martial arts academy in Southern Maryland to offer real Helio Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense. Our Jiu-Jitsu program “Lineage BJJ” is part of “Team Relson Gracie”. Team Relson Gracie consists of over 40 Jiu-Jitsu academies and associations worldwide with over 10,000 active members. Our Jiu-Jitsu techniques and teaching methods are identical to the original Gracie Academy in Rio de Janeiro and the Gracie Academy World Headquarters located in Torrance, CA.
In addition to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Calvert MMA Academy offers authentic Muay Thai (translated to “Thai Boxing”). Calvert MMA Academy’s Muay Thai program, “T.A.G. Muay Thai” is under the direction of Kru Chris Aboy. T.A.G. headquarters is in Sterling, VA and Calvert MMA Academy students may cross train at that location at no additional charge.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:
Many ask, what is the difference is between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (GJJ) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)? In Maryland there are a lot of martial arts schools offering BJJ programs, but few offer authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The major difference between BJJ and GJJ is “instruction methodology” and the “self-defense” aspect of the art. When teaching techniques, true GJJ offers more detail than generic BJJ. So what does this mean to you the consumer? It means jiu-jitsu techniques will be more effective and easier to perform; physical strength and speed aren’t emphasized, so anyone, regardless of age, size, conditioning, or gender can perform the techniques. GJJ also emphasizes self-defense above sports jiu-jitsu and MMA competitions. What good are the techniques you learn if you can’t defend yourself in a street situation? Relson Gracie tells us if he had to choose between sport Jiu-Jitsu or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s self-defense techniques, he would choose “self-defense”.
Of course we would like for you to train with us at Calvert MMA Academy, but if our location in Southern Maryland isn’t convenient for you, please check out our links page for recommendations training locations near you. Our links page lists all of the Relson Gracie Academies and Associations in the USA and other Gracie Jiu-Jitsu schools we recommend in the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. area. All schools listed offer true, traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
“The Jiu-Jitsu that I created was designed to give the weak ones a chance to face the heavy and strong.” -Grand Master Helio Gracie (October 1, 1913 – January 29, 2009)
