Kru Carlos Lopez and his mentors choose to train and advance students in their Muay Thai classes using the Lotus Patching System. Calvert MMA Academy also uses the Lotus system to advance students in their Muay Thai practice. You might wonder what you have to do to get involved with the Muay Thai classes and start earning patches of your own.
Each coach or school has their own way of promoting students. Some choose to use Level training, allowing students to progress starting at Level 1 and moving up from there. Others have adopted the patch system, and students receive patches to sew on their Thai shorts as they progress through the different levels of training.
Kru Carlos Lopez and his coaches, Kru Scott Howard and Coach Paul Sitcharing, utilize the Lotus Patch system in their training programs. They have their own requirements for students to earn their patches, and each level requires something of the students – time, fights, losses, and most of all, experience. Each of Carlos’ Lotus patches have a Tiger inside of them to show respect for his trainers and their program.
There are six levels and six colors of patches: Level 1 is a white patch; Level 2 is a yellow patch; Level 3 is an orange patch; Level 4 is a green patch; Level 5 is a red patch; Kru is a black patch.
To receive the patch at each level, students have to meet certain requirements. For instance, some schools have an attendance requirement that students must meet before they can patch up. Most require students to test each time they’re ready to patch up to make sure that they have the skills needed to function at a higher level. At some point, students must fight to continue to advance.
