Maintaining Your Exercise Routine

Benefits of Maintaining Your Exercise Routine During the Summer

Many people find it difficult to keep up with an exercise program when summer starts.  We work hard during the fall, winter, and spring, attending classes regularly, watching what we eat, and striving for a good balance between rest and activity.  But, when summer hits we often slide back into old habits that keep us sedentary.  Between days at the beach, vacations, and family reunions, exercise often falls to the wayside.  Fortunately, Calvert MMA Academy in Sunderland, MD offers their programs all summer long.

Calvert MMA Academy offers a wide variety of programs that run all year. These include:

  • Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
  • Youth Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
  • Self-Defense
  • Thai Boxing
  • Ladies’ Muay Thai

There are many benefits to maintaining a regular exercise program throughout the summer months.  From muscle tone to cardio endurance, the body responds well to exercising on a regular basis.  Emotionally, exercise keeps spirits up and reduces stress.

Maintaining Weight Loss

Slacking on an exercise program during the summer makes it difficult to maintain any weight loss you achieved in the cooler months.  Many people tell themselves they will do other things, but find that those promises are hard to keep when kids are out of school or families go on a trip.  While short breaks for vacation won’t undo hard work, allowing yourself to get completely off track during the break will.  If you have a regular routine, try to stick with it as much as possible during the summer months so that you don’t spend all fall and winter trying to undo your summer “fun”.

Building Strength & Endurance

Classes like Calvert MMA Academy’s Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Boxing help students build muscle and cardio endurance.  Continuing with classes over summer months allows students to maintain that hard-won muscle tone.  Kids who attend the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu classes through the summer find it easy to keep up with the conditioning aspects of the class, and they get more opportunities to put their jiu-jitsu knowledge to use.

Have you noticed how quickly you lose muscle tone after you quit an exercise program?  Sometimes an injury or illness forces a break, but often we stop exercising simply because our schedule changes or we get bored.  Extended breaks have a negative impact on both endurance and strength.  In fact, according to the International Sports Sciences Association, muscle can lose up to half its strength after just three weeks of disuse.

Keeping Energy Levels High

Exercise increases energy levels, which is important for surviving summer with kids at home and travel plans afoot.  Traveling can be hustings, and staying fit allows parents and kids alike to enjoy whatever destination they choose: Disney, Six Flags, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, biking, rafting, and more.  A study published by the University of Georgia found direct correlations between regular exercise and increased energy levels.  (You can read a summary of the research project at: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/11/061101151005.htm)

Attending the classes at Calvert MMA Academy gives kids and parents, both of whom may be inside sitting for a large parts of their day an opportunity to get up and move in a safe, structured environment.  Whether it’s taking a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu class or coming to a self-defense class, the moves and techniques taught by the instructors give students the energy boost they need.

Reducing Stress

Regular exercise relieves stress by boosting endorphin production, releasing tension, and improving your mood.  Stress affects everyone in one way or another, and exercise is one of the easiest ways to provide stress relief.  A Princeton University study found that physical exercise actually reorganizes the brain to reduce the effects of stress (http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S37/28/70Q72/index.xml?section=topstories).

Whether kids attend the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu classes or the self-defense class, they benefit from the stress relief the classes provide.  Parents need the stress relief from Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Boxing, or self-defense as they run all over with their kids throughout the summer.

Maintaining a regular exercise schedule over the summer provides many benefits to families.  From keeping up with weight loss to reducing stress levels, attending classes at Calvert MMA Academy all summer long will help keep both parents and kids sane during hot summer days.
