Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self Defense

What makes the Calvert MMA Academy – Lineage BJJ different from many other martial arts school is the Gracie Self-Defense program we teach.  With the popularity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions, submission grappling tournaments, and mixed martial arts events, many have forgotten why Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created.  Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created as a means of self-defense and survival in life threatening situations, allowing a smaller, weaker individual to overcome an attack from a larger and stronger attacker.  Helio Gracie, spent his life developing and refining the self-defense techniques of Jiu-Jitsu to be effect in real life situations.  Through the use of technique, timing, and leverage; men, woman, children of all ages, shapes, sizes, and athletic ability can defend themselves with maximum efficiency and minimal effort.

“Always assume your opponent is going to be bigger and faster than you; so that you can learn to rely on technique, timing, and leverage, rather than brute strength” -Helio Gracie

Calvert MMA Academy’s – Lineage BJJ, Gracie Self-Defense program is designed to empower you to effectively defend yourself, family, and loved ones in life threatening situations if the need where to ever arise.    Our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense classes are perfect for anyone wanting to learn proven, realistic, 100% effective, lifesaving self-defense techniques, yet may not desire to grapple in class or compete in grappling and Jiu-Jitsu competitions.  Classes are taught in a fun and completely safe environment.  Age, conditioning, or experience is not an issue in our self-defense program. Calvert MMA Academy’s’ self-defense classes follow a rotating curriculum and students learn over 130 techniques. Classes are taught by presenting a problem, showing a simple solution, and student drill the technique building muscle memory and reflexes to prepare them to react properly in a self-defense situation.  Most students are amazed on how simple, easy and effective our techniques are.  All techniques are based off the theory of natural body movement.  We believe techniques that are flashy, require strength, athleticism and don’t follow natural body movements will fail in real life self-defense situations.  This is why our philosophy is to only use simple and natural body movements in the techniques we teach.

A Jiu-Jitsu Gi is recommended but is not necessary to participate in our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense class.  Prospective students may start at any time in the class rotation.

“There are a lot of World Champion Jiu-Jitsu black belts, but most don’t know how to defend themselves on the streets.  What good is it to know Jiu-Jitsu, if you can’t defend yourself on the streets?”  -Relson Gracie

Calvert MMA Academy’s competition Jiu-Jitsu students (Team Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Maryland – Lineage BJJ) wishing to obtain rank of purple belt must successfully demonstrate knowledge of all the self-defense techniques taught in this program, less the weapon defense self-defense techniques.  To earn a BJJ brown belt, students need to successfully demonstrate club and knife self-defense techniques.  To earn a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, students need to demonstrate gun self-defense techniques.  All black belt test and degree testing at the black belt level is directly with Grand Master Relson Gracie.
