Professor Jim Thrift is a 5th-degree Black Belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with over 40 years of martial arts experience, including more than three decades dedicated to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Grandmaster Relson Gracie.
He is the founder of Calvert MMA Academy® (est. 2007) and Lineage BJJ®, building one of the most respected and established Jiu-Jitsu programs in Southern Maryland.

Built, Not Borrowed
Professor Thrift didn’t inherit a school. He built it.
He opened Calvert MMA Academy® in 2007 with a clear vision:
• Teach real martial arts that actually work
• Build students over time—not overnight
• Create a culture people trust with their families
That same philosophy carried into the expansion of Lineage BJJ®, creating a unified team training under the LINEAGE® banner.
Today, both academies operate as one system—giving students structure, consistency, and a clear path for long-term growth.
Where It All Started
Jim’s martial arts journey began in 1984.
Long before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became popular, he was already training—developing a foundation in striking, grappling, and traditional martial arts.
He trained in:
• Korean martial arts in the Annapolis area
• Kempo Karate under Ricky Thomas
• Judo under William Chaney
These early years built something that still defines his teaching today:
balance, control, leverage, and real understanding—not just movement.
Finding Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Before It Was Popular
In the early 1990s—before most people had ever heard of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—Jim was already searching for it.
At that time, authentic instruction was extremely difficult to find, especially on the East Coast.
So he did what serious students do:
He went and found it.
Over the years, he trained directly with multiple members of the Gracie family, including:
• Grandmaster Relson Gracie (his direct instructor)
• Royce, Rickson, Rorion, Rolker, Rener, and Ryron Gracie
• And even Grandmaster Hélio Gracie himself at the original academy in Torrance, California
That level of exposure is rare.
More importantly—it shaped how Jiu-Jitsu is taught inside this academy today.
Training Without Borders
While serving as a U.S. Navy veteran and later retiring from the United States Secret Service, Jim continued training wherever he went.
He traveled with a gi in his bag and stepped onto mats across the country and around the world.
Different schools. Different styles. Different training environments.
That experience matters.
Because it gave him perspective—and the ability to separate what works from what doesn’t.
What you see on the mat today is the result of decades of real-world training, not theory.
