Instructor-Led Open Mat / Vale Tudo Integration (Ages 14+)
Schedule: Every other Friday
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: Calvert MMA Academy® – 25 Dalrymple Road, Sunderland, MD
This instructor-led session is designed to help students develop a more complete understanding of grappling, striking, transitions, and overall fight awareness in a controlled training environment.
Depending on class size, space, and training goals, students may begin from the feet and work through scenarios that integrate striking with grappling exchanges, helping them better understand distance, pressure, control, and decision-making under more realistic conditions.
This is not a brawl, and it is not a “tough guy” class.
The purpose of this session is technical development, strategy, composure, and controlled application—not trying to hurt your training partner. Students are expected to train with discipline, respect, and control at all times.
Because of the nature of the class, following the rules is mandatory. Anyone who cannot train safely, respectfully, and within the structure of the session will be removed from the class and may lose access permanently.
This class is a valuable opportunity for students who want to build better timing, stronger awareness, and a more complete understanding of how striking and grappling connect in live situations.
Open to ages 14 and up.

At Calvert MMA Academy®, every class is designed to help students build real skill, real confidence, and real-world self-defense ability. Whether you’re brand new, returning after time away, or looking to compete at a higher level, our structured programs offer a clear path for growth.
Our youngest students learn balance, movement, coordination, and confidence in a safe, structured, and fun environment. These classes focus on listening skills, discipline, respect, teamwork, and age-appropriate Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals that help children grow both on and off the mat.
These sessions teach foundational Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, positional control, takedowns, and practical self-defense skills in a way that matches the age and development of each student. Youth classes help students improve confidence, athletic ability, focus, discipline, and resilience while learning how to think and react under pressure.
Our competition team classes are for dedicated students who want to sharpen their skills for tournament performance and higher-level training. Emphasis is placed on live drilling, strategy, conditioning, mindset, and technical refinement. These sessions help students learn how to perform under pressure while continuing to build discipline and leadership.
These classes are the best place for adults to start. Students learn authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive, and beginner-friendly environment. Classes include technical instruction, structured drilling, and controlled live training designed to improve confidence, fitness, self-defense ability, and long-term skill development.
For more experienced students, these sessions focus on advanced technique, positional strategy, high-level drilling, and live application. Students refine timing, pressure, transitions, takedowns, and problem-solving skills while preparing for higher-level training, competition, or personal mastery of the art.
These classes help students become more complete grapplers by improving takedowns, clinch work, positional control, and the ability to adapt without the gi. They are ideal for competitors, self-defense students, and anyone who wants to build a more well-rounded game.
Our striking sessions develop footwork, timing, balance, combinations, defensive awareness, and conditioning. These classes are excellent for beginners, Jiu-Jitsu students looking to round out their stand-up skills, and anyone who wants a fast-paced, high-energy workout with real martial arts application.
Open Mat gives students extra time to drill, roll, troubleshoot techniques, and gain valuable live training experience outside regular class structure. It is one of the best ways to accelerate progress, sharpen timing, and build confidence on the mat.
