At Calvert MMA, your training connects directly to the heart of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu through Grandmaster Relson Gracie—son of Helio Gracie, undefeated Brazilian National Champion for 22 straight years, and one of the most respected figures in the art’s history.

Relson now lives in Brazil, but he continues to be an active presence in our academy. Each year, he returns to teach seminars, host private lessons, and ensure our techniques remain true to the Gracie family’s original vision. For our members, that means rare opportunities to learn from a living legend—something most Jiu-Jitsu schools cannot offer.

For over 30 years, Professor Jim Thrift has trained directly with Relson and the Gracie family. Relson is not only his coach and mentor but also a friend and the overseer of our technical foundation. That connection has brought other Gracie family members and top athletes into our academy, giving our students the chance to train with both the royalty of the art and the current generation of champions.
