Calvert MMA Academy® was founded by Professor Jim Thrift, a 5th-degree black belt under Grandmaster Relson Gracie, Navy veteran, and retired U.S. Secret Service gun carrier. Day-to-day coaching at Calvert is led by Coach Jack Sudduth, under the guidance of Professor Jim Thrift and Professor Kevin Southworth, helping maintain the same standards, culture, and technical direction that define Team LINEAGE®.

Our program is built on real Gracie Jiu-Jitsu — focused on leverage, control, timing, and practical self-defense, not just sport points or flashy techniques. We welcome beginners, experienced students, families, competitors, and anyone looking to become stronger, more confident, and better prepared for real life.
